Brenda Joysmith’s impressionistic work grows out of careful observation of Black people in their ordinary routines. “I select a moment that is particularly expressive, or best characterizes my basic idea,” she explains. “Then I work to create a painting that is both meaningful and enjoyable.” Joysmith’s pastels and paintings have been exhibited in many prestigious galleries and museums, and have been featured on the sets of network television shows and feature films. Her work is included in the personal collections of Maya Angelou, the Honorable Willie Brown, Roberta Flack, and Oprah Winfrey, and in the permanent collections of Alpha Kappa Alpha National Sorority, the EHS Bethany Hospital Birthing Unit, the Colgate-Palmolive Company, the National Council of Negro Women, and the San Francisco Art Commission, among others.
